Poetry is a literary work in verse writing of high quality, great beauty, a piece of art, with emotional sincerity or intensity, a graceful expression showing imagination and deep feeling with beautiful and elegant quality. It is a profound insight that enables a poet to idealize reality and to see the things or situations in a particular way, to express his feelings of his own accord and to represent them in such a way as to delight the readers.
I have never had a love so bitter like the love of poetry, until recently. Since way back in my secondary school I would fret at the sight of a poem on an exam paper, I was a bundle of nerves and I constantly wiped away a cold sweat with the back of my wobbly palm after which I would uninterruptedly rush to the ladies. ‘What exactly scared me in poetry?’ Here I am , staring at the rusty roof and rolling my popped out bloody eyes so fast, exactly the same way I did in that test room. I can barely answer. It was all about an attitude and the fact that I had to think critically, but, what is the fun of poetry if not that?
If your daily life seems poor, do not blame it; blame yourself that you are not poet enough to call forth its riches; for the Creator, there is no poverty.
Rainer Maria Rilke
I was quite disappointed with myself on realizing what I was missing out. Poetry is an expensive jewel that costs you nothing. All it needs is a little effort and in return it can take the residence in your mind. Poetry is more than the words used, we live in that realm at the back of our minds. We dwell around figurative language, blossom there, and we have it in action daily. Poetry another life philosophy, it lets us experience things that cannot be otherwise expressed. Just as the philosophic mind never stops questioning, the poetic mind never stops expressing or seeking means of expression.
The most interesting part is that the poetry in this world is inexhaustible from a wide range of cultures from ancient to modern and a vast array of subject matters. My challenge now is to find poems I fall in love with instantly and poems that cheese me off, poems that dispute my conventional beliefs, broaden my vocabulary and find more magnetizing ways to express myself as it is a unique vehicle of human expression. The skill of reading is one of the most neglected ones and what stands between you and the avid reader you aspire to be is an effort.
The following verses have been taken from one of the poems of a famous English Poet, Thomas Gray.
“Full many a gem of purest ray serene
The dark unfathomed caves of ocean bear:
Full many a flower is born to blush unseen
And waste its sweetness on the desert air.”
These verses are of much value and significance to reveal the reality of life. Indeed, every era is endowed with talented people but few could surpass their boundaries because the dilemma of lack of opportunities has intervened in their way of success. The crushing upshot, the painful results of lack of opportunities is revealed in the above verses.
