Literacy is a right that provides us with a platform to share ideas and contribute to debates promoting growth in communities. Africa is among the continents that have high illiteracy levels according to global literacy rates. As a result, there has been a significant global inequality gap between Africa and other continents. High illiteracy levels lead to increased poverty levels, low living standards, and unemployment among other factors.
Here are a few approaches that can help in illiteracy eradication in Africa:
- There are several international founders that are keen to help the high-risk illiterate areas. It is important for the local government to offer a seamless partnership with such organizations to help alleviate the problem. Most of these international organizations will strive to establish several libraries and supplying used books which go a long way. The local government should help in equal distribution of these books to students in different schools giving priority to most prone areas. We can also support international organizations by donating funds.
- Illiteracy in Africa has a lot to do with cultural norms. Female illiteracy is common which prompted us to donate books this women’s prison . The cultural norms and beliefs in some African communities advocate education for only the male children. As a result, the females are often married off to older and wealthier men at a young age. They lack the basic knowledge and skills to take advantage of self-advancement opportunities. Female literacy levels in Africa have also been reflected in lack of political freedom, freedom from violence and relative seclusion. The local government should work with institutions to provide equal opportunities that promote both male and female literacy.
- Donation of books and funds towards an improved education sector in Africa is essential. African countries strive for change and improvement of their living standards. Change can be influenced by an individual level besides the institutions. Fortunate individuals should donate books or funds to buy them. Several foundations like this organization have donated both new and used books to African communities.
- The literate individuals can also volunteer in organizations to help create awareness among communities. The aim is to educate the young people on empowerment and opportunities available for growth. It will have an impact on the marginalized groups thus reducing the social and economic gap between low and high-income earners.
Conclusion
Improving literacy levels in Africa requires more than a book donation. It is an involving process for individuals, the government, well-wishers and international foundations. The process requires patience and consistency.
