The African continent enjoys a lot of creativity. As such, the Ake Arts and Books Festival is here to promote and celebrate the creativity of the African continent, especially when it comes to literature. It is a four-day arts and books festival that immerses the participants into various cultures. It offers a good chance for everyone to interact with arts and literary icons. Since its inception in 2013, the Ake Arts and Books Festival has incorporated more than one hundred writers, poets, filmmakers, dancers, and thinkers who talk about the African continent, especially through their literary works.
The Ake Arts and Books Festival is always centered on a theme every time it happens. For instance, the 2019 Ake Arts and Books Festival centers on the nexus between the mental and the physical. It will explore the specific phenomena like body image, scarification, stereotyping, tattoos, gender nonconformity, colorism, and other areas that gravitate towards mental health. It has been described as the biggest African annual gathering of literary writers, critics, editors, and readers. Ake Arts and Books Festival was founded in 2-13 by Lola Shoneyin, a Nigerian writer. It has been taking place in Ake, a town in Abeokuta, Nigeria, which is the home of Wole Soyinka, Arica’s first Nobel Laureate. This festival has hosted numerous and notable writers, especially from Nigeria. The guests have to field questions from participants. It is not restricted to books only but other areas of art like photography, short fiction, poetry, and so on.
The Ake Arts and Books Festival has held six editions with the seventh one expected to take place in 2019. All these editions are centered on various themes that explore different areas of art in general. The festival also works with local and international publishers to enhance the accessibility of these books through better prices.
